A GRIM WEEKEND FOR ALEX IN KENTUCKY...
It was a disapponting return to race
fitness for Alex at the Kentucky Speedway. In the practice session, the car
was 6/10ths off the pace on this short, flat-out oval ...
for a 24-second lap, to be 6/10ths away is an eon, and Alex was extremely frustrated!
Nothing the driver can do.
Come qualifying, a fuel pickup problem
meant Alex would start from the back of the grid, never completing
a flying lap.
And in the race itself, Alex spun in avoidance
of a backmarker who had inexplicably braked in the flat-out
turn 3 on the first lap, ending his race on the spot (or, more
accurately, in the wall). A weekend to forget for the AFS Racing
team.

ALEX BACK TO RACE FITNESS
Alex was suffering from an inner ear
problem, which was giving rise to nausea and balance problems, and has prevented
him from driving since his win in Indianapolis in June.
"The problem
we thought was a lack of fluids or whatever at Indy proved
to be an inner ear problem, and the IRL doctors have been
incredible"
said Alex, after undergoing a raft of tests, "I am now cleared
to race again, starting at Kentucky next weekend.
"It has been
so frustrating to have to sit on the sidelines until this
problem cleared up, but now I'm back for the last 4 races,
and I can't wait to be back in the AFS car.
"I'm looking
for more race wins before this year is out" he added,
ominously, for the other drivers ... |

ALEX WINS A THRILLER IN INDY ...
Alex won the Liberty Challenge race in
dramatic style at Indianapolis Motorspeedway - the support race to the F1 US
Grand Prix.
Having taken his
3rd front row grid position in four meetings (missing out
on pole position by 7/100ths of a second), Alex dropped back
at the start of the race as his car spluttered and misfired.
He drove through into the lead with 2 laps remaining. Yet
only minutes before the race, Alex was in the medical centre
receiving treatment ...

ALEX MARRIES IN INDIANAPOLIS ...
They have been engaged for nearly two
years, and had planned a dream wedding on an island in Fiji in late 2007 (when
the racing season ends). But the best laid plans ...
Following a meeting
with his attorney on Monday, Alex and Sam discovered they
were facing potential immigration and visa problems, which
might interfere with his US race program. Alex calmly told
his family that they had decided to marry there and then
in Indianapolis on Friday.
A last minute intercontinental
dash saw members of the family turn up on Thursday, and the
marriage duly took place in wonderful scenic surroundings.
The whole AFS Racing team turned up to join in the celebration,
together with Indy Pro officialdom, the marriage ceremony
performed in wonderful weather by IRL Chaplain Bob Hills,
wedding photographs taken by IRL photographer Ron McQueeney.
The wedding cake came from Wal-Mart.
"There was
a moment when we thought Roger Bailey may have to be our
bridesmaid"
grinned Alex "but luckily the family turned up on time,
and the day was just fantastic. We must thank Gary Peterson and
everyone from the IRL and the AFS team who came at such short
notice to be with us and help us on the day"
Alex and Sam are now living in Orlando
- a new life begins ...

the first time in his AFS Racing car, at Indianapolis ...

ALEX CLAIMS FIRST PODIUM AT ST PETERSBURG
First qualifying went well. This was
basically Alex's first time in a car for around 9 months, so he was anticipating
taking a little time to get up to speed, and to learn about the car and the
tyres, etc. He appeared to get the hang of it fairly quickly, however, and
after a couple of changes - his AFS Racing team engineer, Chuck, was superb,
he said - he ended the session on provisional pole, beating the track record
in the process.
He retained provisional pole throughout
the second qualifying, but was just pipped on the final lap
of the session. However he proclaimed himself pretty satisfied
with his front row position for Race 1, later that that Saturday
afternoon
Race 1 wasn't a
good race. He picked up a puncture on the first lap, which
was caused by the de-lamination of the front wing end plate,
which then cut into the tyre. After struggling with the deteriorating
handling, he was forced to pit, resuming and finishing the
race 2 laps down, in 10th place - this determined his grid
position for the second race on Sunday.
Sunday was an exciting
race. From 10th place, Alex got a good start, making up one
or two places at the first corner. By the end of lap 1 he
was up to 6th. In an exciting charge through the St Petersburg
streets, he continued to carve his way through the field,
and was soon up to 3rd, harrying for 2nd place. "We
were very quick through the tight infield section",
he said later, "but we simply didn't quite have the
speed on the straights, and I just couldn't get close enough
to make any further progress. However, I couldn't really
ask for a better start to the season. It is mine and the
team's first podium in this series, and I'm hopeful we can
continue together and improve on that!"

GEARBOX GREMLINS HAMPER TESTING AT ST PETE
AFS driver Alex Lloyd suffered some gearbox
problems in testing at the Honda IRL Grand Prix of St Petersburg, Florida,
as the selector kept jumping out of gear, and thus ran a reduced number of
laps. He ended today's testing in 4th place, confident of being competitive
in qualifying.
There are 2 qualifying
sessions followed by the first race of the double-header
weekend tomorrow (Saturday). The races - Race 1 on Saturday
afternoon and race 2 on Sunday - are 40 laps each, each race
lasting about 45-60 minutes. A tough task in the 80+ degree
heat of Florida.
Alex's
team mate, Arie Luyendyke Jnr, was some 2.2 seconds slower
than Alex when he (Arie) unfortunately crashed out of the
second test session, and appears unlikely to be able to take
part in tomorrow's qualifying and race, due to substantial
chassis damage.
The 420 HP Indy
Pro cars are stong, and seem well suited for slipstreaming
and close racing, so the lack of a team mate to help in qualifying
will no doubt be a slight hindrance, but Alex professes to
be confident of a strong qualifying. "I need to get
a chance to learn the car and the tyres and the circuit" he
said "but I think by the end of the two qualifying sessions,
we should be able to challenge the Series' more experienced
front-runners"
